Oh hey, look who’s back!
Like you didn’t expect this.
Just to open up conversation: What’s your favorite .22 LR ammo? Throughout my life, I’ve had the best fun in my 10/22s with Remington Golden, which rarely misfire, and have damn good accuracy, with very little barrel fouling. Even when blowing off 500 rounds in a day. I also hunted in my younger years, and still plink today sometimes, with CCI .22 Stinger – warnings be damned, they fire just fine out of my 10/22.
Got a line on a good, unknown brand? Reply in the comments!
It’s no secret that, although I love 7.62×39, .223, .357 mag, etc. for their stopping power… my first love and still my favorite today is the .22 LR. Given a survival situation, I’d rather have a 10/22 over any other firearm. Poachers in Texas have proven again and again that .22 LR can drop a deer. I often go by the rule of thumb that any firearm that can drop a deer can also drop a human being. I might have to put 5 or 10 rounds into a human to drop them, but they will drop – and as I keep my 10/22 loaded with 25 round mags? Not really a problem.
I just wish .22 LR ammo wasn’t a fucking ghost right now.
Believe it or don’t, my single-shot Cooey loves CI – that’s CCI’s Meskin stuff, as in hecho en Mexico. My LGS has a very small supply of it for $6/50. I bought it out of desperation when I couldn’t find my usual Stinger, and was completely stunned by its accuracy.
I love the federal 550 ct copper plated HP.
I miss shooting my 10/22…. 🙁
I saw an article in I think it was SWAT magazine years ago that compared a shotgun with a select-fire 10/22. as far as lethality the 10/22 actually was way ahead, putting more lead on the target in tighter groups at a comparable velocity in a shorter period of time, but the shotgun was more versatile.
I mostly use Lapua Standard Plus in the 10/22 and Eley Club in the target rifle. Both of which cost about £4.80 ($7.40) including the club markup for targets and taxes (I don’t currently have a firearms certificate here in UK and so cannot buy it direct).
CCI 40gr target ammo is what i’ve been using in my Norinco JW15a [CZ452 clone]. Never had a misfire, Lead round nose bullet, subsonic but advertised a standard velocity. Got 1000rds for $70 Australian before it started getting expensive due to lack of supply coming in from the states.
I don’t think my Norinco likes it though, the best group i’ve ever gotten is MOA at 50m, but i usually get around 2-3MOA.
Gemtech subsonic. I’d tell you why, but then I’d have to, you know. 😉
CCI MiniMag copper plated hollow points. My Buckmark prefers them by a lot.
Winchester Xpert 36gr hollowpoints. Box of 500 is going for $25.99 if you can find it. It’s been the staple of my .22’s over the years. Accurate, I can use it for target practice and hunting without having to worry about my POI changing. I can’t even remember my last misfire. Think I had one failure to fire in 5 or 6 boxes of 500. Plus every single one of my .22’s like it
Ithaca Saddlegun (lever Action)
Henry Lever Gun
Savage Model 7 (semi-auto)
Remington 511 (Bolt action, thing will punch out the X ring at 75 yards with this stuff and has taken a number of squirrels)
Winchester 1902 single shot (Little thing absolutely loves this round)
CCI Stingers for me. the two .22LR firearms in my house love it. we’ll buy anything right now, though.
My favorite as of late has been CCI Quiet, which in a rifle is hearing safe. Use it to plink at some steel targets in the backyard (good backstop, no one for miles but a shooting club…. over a mountain). 700FPS isnt much, but its enough to have a bit of safe fun.
Aguilla SSS is fun in the same regard.
Federal 333rd boxes of their Target line shoot pretty nice out of a Henry too.
For Decades I’ve shot the hell out of the Rem Golden Bullet stuff, even used it for competition several times and was holding scores near what guys shooting Eley were getting. In fact you could could win with the stuff except for the occasional flyer that throws you out of the 1/2″ Bullseye at 50m. And my Umerex 1911 loves the stuff, hates most non-plated bullets as they foul it up quickly, sometimes in less than 100rnds building a ridge near the crown that kills accuracy.
Lately for competition I’ve been using a lot of Aguila, my 10/22 loves their SST (60grn sub sonic) and their 40grn match and shoots it as well or better than Eley, yes my gun is wierd it don’t like the uber expensive .22 super match ammo that the olympic team and most competitors use.
And the Aguila Colbri is just plain brutal on small varmints like the ground squirrels that live in the desert of Arizona, they seem more torn up from them than they do full power rounds. While they don’t cycle the 10/22 bolt enough to load the next round, they are super quiet sounding almost like a pellet rifle, with the clack of the bolt being louder than the round going off making it easier to keep shooting little pests since they don’t associate it as a threat.
BTW did anyone else see the post over on the Gunmart Blog where they are declaring Obama ScareII over as the local store he visited happened to be fully stocked? I wish that was true in Arizona, but we still haven’t caught up yet here…
Winchester Wildcats. Cheap, accurate, and all my Rugers just LOVE it. Little on the slow side though.
Damn, who do I have to kill for a case?
This is the first I’ve heard about a .22 LR shortage. I haven’t gone shooting since I had to sell my Ruger .22 carbine; I’ve still got about 5,000 rounds stockpiled. Does that make a millionaire now?
Yeah, the effectivness of the .22LR is underestimated by most i think. It might take more hits but…
I remember reading this story (in a Swedish hunting magazine) about a guy that went hunting Grizzly in Canada. His guide was a native carrying a .22 LR lever repeater. The guy asked the native “How the heck you hunt bear with that?” The answer was “Simple, i empty the gun into it, then i make some tea, then i track it down. It usualy has blead out by then.” True or not? Well, those who know hunters and fishermen… 😉
Here ya go…
Subsonic Sniper .22lr

I know nothing of ammo or type of gun, but I learned how to fire one using my dad’s .22 pistol and my grandfather’s 30/30 long rifle.
Let me tell ya, a 30/30 is murder on your shoulder when you’re 10 😛
Ron Jeremy is known to show up just as fast if there’s food or a movie producer present 😉
Interestingly enough, I have a LGS that has plenty of 22LR. Apparently nobody knows about him, because he has a ton of 22LR and sells it for $25 per 500 rd box. He is permanently my gun store, for not gouging on 22…
I am partial to CCI Mini Mag or CCI Stinger myself, they are the only ones that seem to have enough oomph to properly cycle my 22lr auto handguns.
I do like that shirt Alex is wearing… For some reason I can only find the ones which say “stuff”, though.
You do know we have that shirt for sale, right?
I’ve only shot the 555 round Winchester red boxes. Still have some, along with some Aguila that I picked up at Cabela’s back in January or February or so. Haven’t been shooting in forever, need to go again.
That stuff functioned just fine in my 10/22 while I still had it, and shoots flawlessly in my Savage MkII-F.
I am using the CCI “Quiet” subsonic .22LR as it is earily quiet on my suppressed Walther P22.
