I am not even making this up. This is a real article by the idiots. Here it is.
Yes. The deadliest 5 guns in America are:
1. Pistols
2. Revolvers
3. Rifles
4. Shotguns
5. Derringers
For real.
I just want to know which street gangs are running around pulling off drive-by shootings with fucking Derringers.
OK, so basically what they’re saying is that the most deadly guns are all the generic gun types. While it’s hard to fault their research, one has to say it’s not the most -useful- information in the world…
No, no… it’s ~easy~ to fault their research, because it seems like all they did was go to wikipedia and look up “types of firearms”.
But you can’t deny that they’re probably right, pistols are probably the most deadly* guns in the US! Which is a shock, I was expecting “A minigun like Blain uses in Predator” to be right up there!
Of course, that tells you NOTHING useful. And really, revolvers and deringers are a subset of pistols.
I know, I know, it’s really easy to fault their research because it’s fundamentally lazy. I was just pleasantly surprised they didn’t include “Peanut” on their list in the number 5 position.
*For various REALLY STUPID values of deadly
Point.
It’s like Microsoft Tech Support. Completely accurate and completely useless.
Ms tech supports solution to everything is to reinstall, every single time! Been that way since win95 at the very least…
Revolvers, derringers and pistols are subsets of HANDGUNS.
Get that right.
I’d be very interested in seeing a pre-1900 cite that differentiates “pistol” from “handgun”; I’ve never seen one, except in the time period where ALL man-portable firearms were referred to as “handguns” (as opposed to cannon). (If that’s what you meant, you’re correct; but then rifles, muskets, and shotguns would also be subsets of “handguns”.) It was briefly a fad in the mid-20th Century to use “pistol” as shorthand for “automatic pistol”, but that’s neither traditional nor technically-correct usage and seems to have largely died out.
Colt referred to his revolver as a type of pistol in his patent filings. Deringer never filed a patent for his designs AFAIK, but it seems to have been referred to at the time and since as a “pocket pistol”. (For example, in 1865 the New York Herald referred to John Wilkes Booth’s Deringer-made gun as a “pocket pistol” in the articles reporting Lincoln’s assassination.) Clearly, the revolver and derringer are, as Charles stated, a subset of pistols.
They did find a .45 Colt/.410 Derringer. Almost guaranteed to maim the target and user. You can tell it’s loaded because the shell sticks out past the barrel.
You want a really deadly gun? Try “four-inch naval” as a gun type. I wonder which states would allow me to install one of those in the front yard for home defence.
Four? I thought we just used 76mm and 5″/54caliber.
4.5″ / 114mm, officially: http://www.armedforces.co.uk/navy/listings/l0014.html
Vulcan Phalanx … not as dangerous as a derringer?
Ohhh… UK. Not my Navy.
For home defense, there is nothing like a punt gun.
My local gun shop can’t find me any “A” gauge shells.
Consider, for a moment, the kind of people who still read Rolling Stone… And ask yourself one question. “Had they been capable of rational thought, reasoned discussion, fact checking, research, or not being someone’s ball-gargling shill, would the majority of the people reading the magazine have understood a fucking word of it?”
Well, they claim they did look up actual ATF trace data, so they’re couting, more or less, “number of guns recovered in crimes.”
That answers why derringers are there–BATFEIEIO did traces on 2,000 of them in 2012. One assumes that most of the derringers were “the arsenal we found when we searched the guy’s house and put everything illegal on his bed as a trophy shoot.” The last one of those I saw included “swords” (really more like long daggers) and a few pills.
I defy you to read the actual article and not laugh till you choke… “pistols are defined by their built-in barrel and short stock.”
The hell?
I mean, if you’re going to try to write a serious article about the “five deadliest guns”, wouldn’t it make more sense to do actual research and do something like “5 specific firearm models most used in violent crime”, or something like that?
Or maybe “the five most dangerous guns to own, because they’re absolute crap and are likely to injure the user”. I’d read that article.
I’ve been closely following the right to arms debate since the mid nineties, and this is the single stupidest article on the topic I’ve ever seen. Even the RS commenters are gleefully ripping the typist and her typesetter new fuck holes. (What? No, pretty sure there was no writer or editor involved. Why do you ask?)
Somebody (Ace of Spades, maybe? who point to this incomprehensible sentence: “the explosive that creates the energy to fire the gun occurs in the fixed shell of a shotgun rather than the metallic cartridge of a rifle. ”
But I personally love the qualifier in the title: “The Five Most Dangerous Guns In America”. Yes, “In America”. I wonder what the five most dangerous guns are in Africa, say, or amongst the ChiComs, or down Iraqi way.
“In America.” Sheesh.
Didn’t RS just publish another piece of nonsense a week or so ago? Something that also got thousands of loyal readers telling them to eat poisoned rat shit?
You know it was in their satire section…..
Um. Yeah. Except it’s one of their “America’s Gun Violence Epidemic” features… http://www.rollingstone.com/feature/gun-control/americas-gun-violence-epidemic
As someone who’s been on the receiving end of gun violence I can sympathize in needing better gun control and not allowing potential Darwin Awardees access to them. I got shot in the arm when I was 19 by a drunk bitch who was aiming at her boyfriend. I got in the way because she followed him to the bar and was planning to maim him, she had to have a few (dozen) drinks to make herself brave enough to shoot him. Instead I got shot because she wouldn’t “man up” and shoot him at his place with his whores.
How exactly is it the gun that is to blame for this? What you really need are laws against “drunk bitches” shooting at their boyfriends… and hey, look, we have those! Laws don’t seem to have helped you.
Or would it have been just fine if she had accidentally stabbed you instead?
Because it’s easier to regulate guns than drunk crazy bitches.
heh, y’think? I mean, seems about the same to me. Check out Mexico… And latinas.
I sure as shit hope so, my worst nightmare is a drunk crazy bitch with a gun. Already had the drunk’n’crazy part, and that ended with the police taking my ass home.
Of course, if you want to do something about people who cause collateral damage while firing at someone else, you really need to start with the police.
Ha! M79 grenade launcher goes under the radar again!
I’m just waiting for all this China Lake related violence to stop!
Well, since RS has had no relevance to the music industry in probably THIRTY FUCKING YEARS, they have to weigh in – badly – on politics.
I love how the description of “pistols” on their list is “Defined by their built-in barrels and short stocks.”
Gave me a chuckle.
Steyr AUG is a pistol, now?
Why is “loaded” not number 1?
Because there were more incidents of “unloaded”.
Just saved a ton of money on my shooting supplies by switching to unloaded guns.
Here’s the five most deadly types of automobiles in the US:
Cars. Trucks. SUVs. Semis. Amphbibious Automobiles.
I’ll be awaiting my call from RS for a writing job.
The five most deadly types of aircraft in the US:
Rotary-wing aircraft. Fixed-wing aircraft. Balloon. Ornithopters. Dirigibles.
Publishers: please PM for my direct deposit information.
You left out minivans. Deadly because soccer moms.
and motorcycles, because you need something that’s obvious (moto fatalities per mile driven… er, operated… are huge compared to any other motorized vehicle) and something completely “WTF why is that included?”
“5 deadly motor vehicles THAT WILL BLOW YOUR MIND!
1) a car
2) A truck
3) a motorbike
4) A armoured personnel carrier
5) OMG A TANK
As you can clearly see by this list, I’m a spavined shit-weasel who’s only hunting for a paycheck at your expense! GIVE MEH MONEY!”
Hmm… I don’t see machine guns, cannon, or rocket launchers on the list, so I guess RS thinks they’re okay?
Fuckwits…
When I read the article yesterday, I kept on hearing the counselor from South Park saying “Guns are bad. mmkay.”
My favorite comment on that slideshow was:
“Top 5 places where psychopaths live:
1) Homes
2) Houses
3) Apartments
4) Condominiums
5) Derringers”
Where are the machine guns and DD’s? Not deadly enough?
, OMG, and the AIRGUNS….shooting deadly bits of air…
and the mysterious “black powder” voodoo guns that produce
their own smoke screen to conceal their location?
….stick to lousy music and mushrooms, idiots.
Also tattoo guns, nail guns and tranquiliser dart guns.
No, really. Look how many people get hurt at zoos, and divide that by the tiny number of shots fired from those dart guns, and it becomes clear they’re incredibly dangerous to the innocent public and sh*ahem* sorry.
I just want to know which street gangs are running around pulling off drive-by shootings with fucking Derringers.
Dude, read Larry Correia’s Monster Hunter series. Those gnomes are nothing to fuck with.
If magazines are an old and dying media, this Rolling Stone article is just one of those demetia episodes. Like when grandpa wanders outside the house naked, thinking he’s at the original Woodstock.
R.S. has been worthless since P.J. O’Rourke stopped giving them material to publish.
On another blog, someone stated that the author “has a head full of sailboat fuel”.
The Internet is still awesome.
I guess the NRA should do the top 5 list of bad music
1) Cassette Tapes
2) Vinyl
3) 8 tracks
4) MP3
5) Rick Astley
I can give up all of them except that last one.
You’ll have to pry that one from my cold dead hands.
Jane’s getting serious……
Janie’s got a gun?
About five percent serious:
The worst part of this?
It perpetuates the myth that “pistol” means self-loader as opposed to revolver.
Period sources from the time when revolvers and single-shot relics were all there were indicate that “pistol” was used to refer to a handgun in general, and “revolver” used to specify the subset of pistols which had a revolving cylinder.
(Which makes sense, as “pistol” dates to the 1570s as a term for a handgun.)
Exactly! (Wrote something very similar above, about 25 minutes before you did, but it’s stuck in the moderation queue.)
I always packed a derringer when I was a Shark
OK. Give them half a point for basically admitting that “assault rifle” is a useless term in context. Then take away 1,000,000 points for being total dumbasses. For comparison – I have and love a pit bull. Often on the list of “most deadly” dogs – but NOT tops on the list of most frequent biters. So, top 5 bite risk dogs from unbiased sources http://listverse.com/2012/05/04/top-10-deceptively-dangerous-dog-breeds/
include – Chihuahuas at #1, then Beagles, Pekes, and Shar-peis. Bull terriers (all of them, not just Pits) come in at #5. (This is frequency of bites, not kill potential) (Like Derringer. Not kill potential vs. say, a Glock.)
Stupid, stupid Rolling Stone. Retire…until you know what you are talking about, anyway.
P.S. why does every liberal petition site assume that because I want to help manatees or protect reproductive freedom that I am supporting the Everytown bullshit and hate firearms of all types? Jesus. One of the reasons I’m an avid environmental supporter is that I HUNT. SMH.
Why do so many gun sellers assume I’m a Tea-Party/rabid evangelical Christian?
So the 4 most common types of guns are also the 4 most dangerous ones?
The five most dangerous firearms are the five major firearm platforms- eureka!
*No agenda was harmed in the writing of this article.
Derringer drive-by shootings? Well, of COURSE you’ve heard of them! What, with all of those Amish gangs, speeding by on Clydesdales, with their Derringers, muskets and blunderbusses, wreaking ye Olde Testament havoc upon their Mennonite arch-enemies?
This has to be satire. I mean, come one, revolvers and derringers ARE pistols! They even say so! And once we take out pistols, rifles, and shotguns, I am truly at a loss as to what is left. Artillery?
Crank-fired machine guns, rocket launchers, and plasma rifles.
And arquebuses.
Smooth-bore, comes under shotguns. 😉
FAST auto-loaders, not guns, not real. Although there was the Gyro-Jet…
Damn it, they must have seen me trying out my m4 Alaskan survivor derringer. check out this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nax7El5hIHg (Note: not me in the video just someone shooting one who happens to be about my age.)
Gotta love you some .45-70 out of a derringer 🙂
Hey, give them some credit!
Their list *could* have been:
1) handguns
2) long arms
3) carbines
4) um….
You’re forgetting about:
4- bayonets
5- shoulder things which go up.
heat seeking bullets that cook your prey as well as kill it.
ooh ooh ooh — I want! Will they do it medium-rare?
Hm. I think that depends on your accuracy and caliber.
Russian Anti-Aircraft missile systems.
This is about as stupid as claiming that the deadliest automobile in America is the four-wheeler.
