The Back Room 2
I’ve handled some weird ammo, but doing research for this story arc opened my eyes. Modern gunners like to think that 9mm, .223, and 7.62×39 are solid calibers that have stood the test of time. Turns out there are a lot of really fucking weird calibers from past years that aren’t around anymore. Shit be fuckin’ weird, man. The gun world is in a state of constant evolution. Perhaps, 50 years from now, there will be no 9mm pistols – kids will be firing shit that’s all 6.9x44mm, laughing at us for our backward ways.
So some of you metalheads know that Arch Enemy, one of my favorite metal bands, changed out the lead singer. Angela apparently wanted to retire, so they found this new chick.
…Yeah, she can stay.
Wait a second, wait a second…..3rd panel looks…
It looks like you tried a more realistic art style!
How dare you man!?
Pffft, looks good! 😀
I think the details help with reinforcing the position.
I don’t know if you’ve noticed or not, but the quality of his artwork has improved significantly since the start of the comic.
This is actually pretty typical for comics; The artist gets better (and faster) as time goes on, and is therefore able to put out a more visually appealing product in less time.
Did you know that Oderus Urongous, lead singer of GWAR, is dead?
Very, very sad. Gwar was anti-metallica, fun, loud, and without a stick up its ass (or hair transplants). He’ll be missed.
Yeh. Note in tomorrow’s post.
I bet you can guess what band I’m posting.
When i type Remington Neopolitan Double ball 45-69 nothing comes up.
Shame, wish i could find some info on it. Looks interesting.
I will let you off the hook and note that I made that one up.
Kinda though that, but i’d heard of all those other calibers so i thought that you wouldn’t have an odd one out.
The “double ball” part gave it away – I was pretty sure that that wasn’t real.

Probably as soon as someone figured out how to fire a bullet someone else thought “Maybe it would work better with two of them?” I was actually surprised it wasn’t real.
“someone else thought “Maybe it would work better with two of them?””
Turns out that no. No it doesn’t. 🙂
Hey, buck & ball is a thing. (Smoothbore, but hey, it’s a bullet.)
“The 30-06 is never a mistake”
-Townsend Whelan
Go ahead and laugh, kids. Your day will come…
Even as a young man still under 30, I have to agree with Mr. Whelan: M2 Ball is never a mistake.
Hey, add everything from lightly greased .300 “O” buckshot and a couple grains of Bullseye to 220gr. jacketed soft point with a compressed load of medium slow powder to that M2- Voila! You’re Borris Badinoff! Ready for moose AND squirrel-
Heck all my friends look at me like I’ve got 3 heads when I pull out my old Marlin 336 in .35 Remington. They don’t even listen when I try to get ammo for my Mauser, Arisaka, or Carcano. that .35 remington though… Man has to be one of my favorite cartridges. Punch through brush with barely any deviation, or reach out and touch something at 175 yards if you need too.
Is anyone else a little shocked that Omar seems to know his shit?
Some people are pretty knowledgeable in specific areas, but not very bright in others. I know an engineer who designed parts that are now sitting on the moon, but doesn’t understand how that box on his desk works.
I heard .357 Max was best shot through a rifle than a revolver. Something about the excess hot gas leaving between cylinder & barrel would eventually cut through the revolver’s frame. It’s one caliber I’d like to try shooting
I always thought .454 Casull was a better carbine round than a pistol round. And .44 Magnum wors better in a carbine too, IMO.
Now… Where’s that box of .41 Magnum..?
Well, antecdotal evidence here, but on my most recent range trip I took a .357 Mag revolver and a lever-action pistol in the same caliber out. Recoil was much easier out of the lever action than the revolver.
They always look at me like I’ve grown horns when I ask for .244 ammo. “You mean .243?” they say. No. .244. Then, when I make it easy for them and ask if they have any 6mm Remington, they still don’t know what I’m talking about. Not even the reloading guys can humor me on that one.
Heh! .244. Haven’t heard that one in a while. 😀
Anyone got some .35 Winchester..?
How about 25-20 Winchester? Looks like a mini 30-30.
Hey, Omar! A lot of that stuff is probably worth more now to collectors than you paid for it! You can have a longer honeymoon! 🙂
There’s a reason the .45 Colt is still around. It’s not fast, it’s not fancy, it just puts big holes where you want ’em.
I reload, and am often entertained by the odd brass I find at the range. I put stuff I pick up by mistake in a box, and when that’s full put it on a table behind the shooting benches with a note they’re free to a good home.
Funny, I can sooooo relate to today’s comic. We have so much weird shit in our shop it’s not even funny. Thank god for Gunbroker! I’ve moved more oddball obsolete ammo that way in the last few months, otherwise it would be collecting more dust over the next 20 years…
Meh. Call me up when you find some Trounds, or gyrojet ammo 😀
How many you want?
I shoot .357 maximum from a TC Contender. I got it years ago as a silhouette gun. I just love hauling it out at the range and having people do a double-take when they see those crazy-long shells.
In fact, I just cleaned out a local store of old stock maxi ammo and brass. Happy days.
Old Surfer, .25-20 Win. ?? You bet ! We have three ( two levers & one pump ) rifles that fee on that stuff . . . . also have a M94 in .25-35 Win. ! And of course, a M71 in .348 Win. . . . . all FUN STUFF !!
Just sold a box of .25-35 at the Rutland VT gun show this past weekend. Guy was thrilled (and slightly flabbergasted) to find out that my loader makes the stuff. What floored ME was when a guy asked for a box of .401 Winchester Self-Loading! I was sure that was going to be on my table for months, if not years!
Yup, those old rifles are still out there, and there are folks who love them, obviously.
Two comments- good on Alissa! The Agonist came several times to Dallas on her watch and impressed the hell out of us. She can cover both ends of fem vocals, too- both her death-growl and her lyrical singing are good, and it’s really impressive when she switches back and forth. I don’t personally go so much for growl-heavy metal, but I very much respect and admire her abilities.
Also got a kick out of the “metal head dating” ad attached to the video. Not in the market, but glad it’s there for those still looking.
