Introducing Maria
I think you’ll like where this is going.
SO! Decided to run the SKS test on Saturday.
For those just checking in, I took my SKS to a shooting outing a few weeks back, and the Old Man Murray firing pin I’d installed a while back failed. Pretty spectacularly at that. It appears that primers were popping, which melted the spring in the pin, which rendered the rifle inoperable until I found a way to get that bullshit out of the bolt. This pissed me off something fierce, as the OMM Firing Pin claims that it will make your rifle safer and more reliable. Instead, it did the opposite of that. Murray Hisself checked in on the comments of that post, and claimed that it was bad ammo – the link he posted says it was Wolf brand of some kind, and I remembered that we’d just bought some Wolf earlier this year. OK, I can see how that’s plausible. But I also wanted to see if the original firing pin would have such an issue – using the same ammo, I wanted to test the original firing pin.
So I did.
First off, I discovered, upon preparing the ammo for the range, that I own no Wolf brand ammo of any kind in 7.62 x 39. We bought some wolf recently – it was 1K rounds of WPA in .223. I misremembered. I tend to buy my 7.62 bulk, and I buy the cheap bullshit they import from the Soviets. Found out that the stash I’d raided for the ranch day was a mix of Tula, Ulyanovsk, and Brown Bear. I haven’t purchased ANY 7.62 x 39 in over 3 years, because I already had a bigass pile of it.
I had exactly 20 rounds of Brown Bear left (hate the stuff – lacquered casings make a stink, but admittedly, it always goes bang), so I grabbed that, 20 rounds of Uly, and 40 rounds of Tula.
The failure at the ranch occurred after exactly 43 shots. So it was 4 stripper clips, I do not recall what exact brands. However, within 43 rounds, primers popped and the spring melted.
So here’s our test:
Went to Elm Fork, on a beautiful day. Took my cohort, Trinity (who is also my daughter).
Trin was ready to help me blow off 80 rounds of mixed ammo and make sure we gathered every single casing.
The rifle, one of my favorites in our collection. Chinese SKS, Type 56 from the 06 factory, likely manufactured in 1973, but I could be completely misreading the markings. Whatever the case, it is NOT a new rifle, but it’s solid and tends to go bang every time.
The SKS Food. Two strippers of Brown Bear, two of Ulyanovsk, and two boxes of Tula.
About to start with the Bear rounds. Note my hi-tech shopping bag brass catcher, which worked fairly well – out of the whole day, only had to chase down about ten spent runaways.
Trin got through about half the second stripper of Bear, but didn’t like the recoil of the rifle. Pansy. (Kidding, I’m proud of her shooting abilities.)
Fun! Her grouping is the center, mine’s the upper left. 25 yards, I cloverleafed 7 shots while she spotted me. The trigger break on this rifle is snappy, but I might do a job on it to make it cleaner. Also, the sight picture is a tiny bit off. Need to raise the front sight post about 1 mm to get perfect.
We blew through the 80 rounds in about an hour. This was after we moved it back to 50 yards, iron sights – this rifle isn’t going to pound nails, but that spread near my hand? I’ll take it.
Tomorrow: THE RESULTS!
Nothin’ wrong with them groups. Also, when the figgety fuck did Trin get so TALL?
Over the last year. She’s gonna be taller than me.
I think she’s going to be at least a little bit of a heart-breaker π – she just has that look…
More gun and personal life, under the comic content would be greatly appreciated.
I like your Daughters seriouse face. π
not the emot I was going for, sorry about that.
lol
Love my SKS. Bought mine with a ton of extras for around 350. Same as yours, a Chicom.
Love the thing to death. Only thing i would like is a longer buttpad as the Chicom was not built for my large Anglo-Saxon heritage. I really like the cleaning kit in the buttstock and am trying to find something that would add an inch or so but still allow me to keep the kit in the stock.
I’ll have to see if I still have it to get the make. My SKS came with a recoil pad that from the factory had the hole to access the tool kit in the butt. Took it off because it made the rifle a little too long for me. But yeah – Chicom and love the miserable thing!
Lemme know if you find it. I wouldn’t putting one on.
It occurs to me that someone may have just bought an aftermarket pad and drilled out a hole for the finger-biter kit.Nope, never mind, here it is. Hmm. May grab that in a couple weeks.
Yup, that looks like it. If I remember correctly, the kit is a little snug getting through the hole. In’s not an issue, but out was sometimes challenging.
That’s what she said…
I like the inclusion of some of your real life pictures, you seem like a top notch guy!
boy ..does he have you fooled π LOL seriously he and mel are some of the coolest artists i know π
Science is Fun. π
Very interested to hear the results.
Thanks! Leave us hanging on 2 fronts now! π
Three fronts, innit?
Mick/Heidi (or is it Heidi/Mick?)
Omar/P_NOCHA
SKS/Old Man Murray
At any rate, this level of suspense is incredible – I look forward to the results of all three.
10 round groups, approved.
Adorable daughter/helper/minion on the range, approved.
Testing to prove theories? The only way to get facts.
Man I am glad I found this comic!
I think there may have been a misunderstanding. My reading of Murray’s response to you was that he uses Wolff springs in his kits, not that you are using Wolf ammunition (apropos of nothing, brand names don’t mean much with Russian ammo, it tends to come from a handful of factories regardless of box art). Wolff springs are righteous, I use them in place of OEM on several guns and am a happy shooter.
If you go to the link in his post, they keep talking about “THAT particular ammo” causing the problem, and appear to be referencing Wolf WPA rounds.
Thing is, I don’t own any of that particular brand in 7.62 x 39. Never have. At first I thought I MIGHT, but nope. Only in 9mm and .223 – both of which work fine in our guns.
I’ve said before I’m looking for an SKS. My local gun shop is selling a Yugo in good shape for $500. They’re also charging $300 for a Mosin (Ripoff?). I’ve been told by people on reddit and youtube that the most I should pay for an SKS is $400, for a Russian in good condition. I personally think $500 is too much, and the store owner’s wife is handling things while he’s off on a hunting trip, and she’s not a gun pricing expert. I tried contacting people selling them for a better price on Armslist, but it’s been weeks and neither person has bothered emailing me back.
I’m in a predicament and don’t know what to do. I want an SKS, though and want to make sure I don’t get ripped off.
Hit the gun shows. Even at the height of the Obamascare, I saw them going for $300/Chinese or less.
Some guy in Georgia contacted me via Reddit saying he had an SKS he was thinking of selling. I might take up his offer and have him ship it to my local dealer. If it doesn’t work out, I’ll have to check for gun shows in my area.
You should NEVER pay 500 for a Yugo. I bought mine for $250 about 6 years back. Try closer to 300-350.
Now I understand that times have changed, but the Yugo ones are often considered about mid-tier, maybe a bit lower in the SKS realm due to them being front heavy (rifle grenade launcher+bayonet), occasionally having issues with the gas switch messing up the semi auto function (due to not being properly cleaned), and that they aren’t chrome lined.
Don’t let that stop you from buying one though. They’re fantastic. Watch some youtube videos on how to break one down (it’s unbelievably simple) so you can check the internals before you buy.
As far as a $300 Mosin? Assuming it’s your run of the mill Russian Mosin, never. No way. If it’s a Finnish one, then that’s a bit different and is usually worth that asking cost. I’ve also seen M-44s running in that area as well.
If you’re looking to get a standard Mosin that will work, check out AIM Surplus dot com. After shipping and transfer, you’ll still be well under 300.
The price has gone up a bit on the SKS in the past few years. I could be convinced to buy one for $400, but that’d be an awful lot of convincing. Thanks for the reply. Bookmarked AIM surplus, it looks like a great site.
MY SKS is the rifle I’ve had the longest (after a .22), and if I *ever* sold any of my guns, that’d be the last to go, after selling limbs and internal organs! It was a Xmas gift, back when they could be had for under a C-note.
AFAIK the ChiCom firing pins were the main ones with the slam-fire problem, usually after improperly reassembling it upside down in the firing pin group. It seems to me like this has caused SKS owners to be overly paranoid about the firing pins in their rifles, and a entire market devoted to replacing those pins arose to cash in on that fear. The best treatment I’ve heard (and simplest) is to thoroughly clean the firing pin assembly by dropping it whole into boiling water to clean away the accumulated grease and dirt, much like you had to do to soften the melted junk in yours, then lightly oil it.
I’m also looking forward to your update.
There really is a Trinity Shooting Supplies? π
Good picture.
Just for those that don’t habla espaΓ±ol, P_NOCHA or ‘pinocha’ is mexican slang for female genetalia.
Nice.

Good catch. π
The question is, is Maria’s Pinocchio OEM or aftermarket?
Good shooting there! Your daughter is a cutie. Is she a lefty or does she just shoot that way? My son is a lefty, but he shoots right-handed.
Lefty, shoots rifles/shotguns left and pistols right. She used to shoot right-handed, but she’s left-eye dominant.
I did everything very righty, and was a good marksm..girl (I was young), until I went from coke-bottles to contacts, which I could only wear in one eye. The left eye. Really messed me up.
Back then, most glasses had actual glass in them. Even when they went to plastic, they didn’t get to making ultrathin lenses until I was well into so-called adulthood.
So now, I kind of prefer the glasses. Modern contacts are crap anyway IMO.
My hat is off to Trin for adapting.
