I am a giant fan of the Springfield XD series, I truly am, but I think their lettering system is getting out of hand.

The latest iteration of Traveller (not the Mongoose one, the one Marc Miller has been working on in his secret underground lair for ten years or so — http://www.traveller5.com/ ), has a weapon building system that, like everything in Traveller, outputs a long string of code letters to describe what you’ve just built. It looks a lot like the ones you’re using in the strip.
Heh. The Italians flew the F-104 for forty years, finally giving it up as a result of signing on to the Eurofighter program. They even made their own models after Lockheed stopped producing the plane. By 2005 they had appended so many letters onto the designation due to the multiple upgrades they were about to run out of alphabet. 🙂
I bought a plain-old service model XD in 40 for myself for christmas this year. It is bloody awesome. Since I am a long-range shooter, my first instinct was to pace off 50 yards (not feet, yards) and set up a bunch of clay pigeons on the berm behind the range. I hit one with my first shot, and took one out with every two to three shots after that. I guess what I’m saying is that the goddamned thing is accurate as hell. More accurate than I am with a pistol, that’s for sure.
At least they have some kind of meaning… Try Porche 911 models…
Try almost any car model now. BMW and Mercedes were both traditionally [series/class][engine size], so a 318i was a 3-Series with a 1.8L engine. So, how big is the engine in a BMW 328i? Was 3.0L, it’s 2.0L in the new ones. How about a 335i? 3.0L. Mercedes C350? 3.5L, amazing! How about C300? …also 3.5L. C250? 1.8L. If you can remember which Lincoln is which (MKZ, MKS, MKX, MKT) I applaud you (hint: that’s roughly in order of increasing size). Infiniti still makes some sense (G37 is a 3.7L, M56 is a 5.6L), and Audi is a bastion of light in comparison (A4 2.0T is a 2.0L w/turbo, A6 3.0T is a larger platform than the A4 and has a 3.0L w/turbo, S4 3.0T is a sport version of the A4 with 3.0L w/turbo).
The 240D was a 2.4L diesel. 300D 3L, 300SD luxury 3L, 300SDL luxury long wheelbase 3L. 450SL? Superiight, nothing to do with luxury or long wheelbase. 300TD? Stationwagon 3L.
So there’s still some rote memorizations.
