Perhaps by him failing to mention this arrangement to Heidi while also failing to keep it in his pants around her. While there would be a certain poetic justice there, I doubt she would see it that way, thus invoking the Ire of the Redhead. (Which I can say from plentiful experience is not something you want to invoke.)
Yeah, I don’t think Heidi the redhead would take too kindly to being the secondary, especially since she was first chronologically.
If the person themself does not independently want to be a secondary, that’s one of those conversations that just never goes well. It’s one thing for them to say “Look, I have really limited time/am mostly into not-your-gender/have other life priorities” and seek out that role, it’s another to have it foisted upon them. Particularly if it comes with the common new-to-this clumsy “so this is what you can have, take it or leave it” phrasing. Imposing those kind of best-next best favoritism framings has made a lot of people decide that poly is less fun than ferret legging.
I for one wasn’t all that concerned that Mick was “cheating” on Alex, as she had already struck me as probably not being in the same place, so to speak, as Mick imagined. So that wasn’t the issue.
BUT.
I still think Mick was stupid stupid stupid for getting back together in any way with Heidi. That girl’s trouble.
