Poly Geometry
Welcome to the madhouse, Mick. Here’s how it goes. Take notes, you might need a spreadsheet.
So. Open Carry is becoming a hot button issue here in Texas again.
On the one hand, if open carry was legal, duh, I’d be all for it. I would wear a sidearm just because I could, and also because my big black Taurus .357 is one hell of a fashion accessory. Got a drop-leg holster for it and everything. It would match my Prada handbag.
On the other, the isn’t an issue I feel strongly about enough to get involved. I can’t open carry in Texas? Meh. No skin off my nose.
Dubstep!
Oh, hey! The Government shut down! Right on! I’M IN CHARGE! I’M IN CHARGE!
I’m still kind of gobsmacked that open carry isn’t legal in Tejas in the first place.
Yeah seems kinda weird that Texas is not open carry. I mean here in AZ we have legal open carry, and legal concealed carry for all.
I’m not sure about those of you in Texas(though it IS my home state… I miss San Antonio), but here in Arizona, we have only a few who open carry. I personally don’t like open carry. Not for the openly carrying of firearms part, but the nutters it usually attracts. The ones who usually end up open carrying in my eyes seem like they fall into two categories that worry me.
1) Those trying to make a statement. Usually to a cop when some whiney person calls the cops that there’s a scary man with a gun out there. Basically these people really tick me off, because they are openly TRYING to get into a confrontation with the police. Usually they have a friend with them who is recording it so they can play it on youtube and be a “2A hero” when all they are doing is proving they can be rude to a cop. They tend to hurt the 2A cause by missing some minor law that the cop then uses to lock them up.
2) The MAN ON A MISSION. Essentially the guy who might be a mall cop or… well you know the guy. Usually has that vest on that would indicate he was a CCW holder, but still has that iron strapped to his leg. Spindly little guy with those eyes wandering around in a state of permanent readiness… Usually he has a 1911 with the hammer back because there’s a round in the chamber, and the safety only works while the hammer is full back. They tend to be generally good people, but worry me because of the perception they generate for gun owners.
I’m not going to say no to open carry, but you gotta be careful the number of places that are “Gun Free” are everywhere. And I hate leaving a gun in an unattended car. Better to CCW and not have to keep removing the gun every time you want to pop into a grocery store. It’s still technically illegal(if they have a no guns sign) in AZ. But concealed nobody needs to see it unless it’s necessary for my survival.
It is not illegal to carry in a “gun free zone” unless there is proper 30.06 signage posted at all entrances or the are an establishment that derives more than 50% of their sales from alcohol. The exceptions to this are things like schools or government buildings etc. Unless your local grocer has up the proper signage, carry away.
I think he was referring to AZ law, which I’m unfamiliar with.
In TX, it has to be proper 30.06 signage, or verbal/written notice from the property owner.
I wasn’t sure about TX, but here in AZ if they put up a sign that says “No guns allowed” you are in violation of the law if you carry. However, if you’re properly concealed, it’s kinda hard to tell that you have a weapon.
In TX, it needs to be a legal 30.06 sign, posted at an exactly uniform eight, to be valid.
Or, as 1TalTXn says, verbal or written notice. I know a lot of people here in Texas misunderstand this part of the law, but here is how it goes:
If there is a 30.06 sign, or a “51” sign, any carry is against state firearms statues. You can be arrested and prosecuted for a gun law violation. If someone who has authority (owner, manager, even a regular employee) asks you to leave for any reason (including carrying a gun) and you do not, you have not committed a firearms crime but you have committed criminal trespassing. Not the same thing, but also will get you arrested and put in jail.
… I swear you’ve been reading Kimchi Cuddles when that bit of who is messing with who there in the second panel. That said, I’m kinda lovin’ how polyamoury is getting to be a thing people can just shrug off and not give a hoot as to who’s doin’ what under whose bed in a leopard skin….LOL
Yay for Kimchi Cuddles!
Gotta love relationships that can only be described by means of Venn diagrams and Langdon charts.
Or a Wheel of Fortune.
Wait, how can he be her type if he’s a mono/’nilla guy who flips out over poly/kink stuff? Or are we just talking her type in regards to ‘nilla sexing?
Heh.
de gustibus non est disputandum
Someone’s ‘type’ isn’t just about your sexual preferences. I think she likes the fact that he’s gun savvy, enjoys shooting (an obvious shared interest), similar music, a fondness for libations and a snarky sarcastic sense of humor. There are plenty of people with different sexual appetites who end up together because personality trumps a lot of things.
Also physically. I’m sure Zulu is a nice guy, but I imagine Alex would be pretty interested in a fellow gym rat.
I think he’s ‘her type’ because she genuinely likes him. He appeals to her in some subjective way. She slept with him because she wanted to make sure, on her part, that he was compatible with her and possibly compatible with her other mates… Of course being monogamous myself, I could be way out there and completely wrong… wouldn’t be the first time. I’m straight… not narrow. Live to be happy… cause no harm.
OC gives you two things:
1) Because the occasional “flashing” is legal we can carry bigger iron. Call it “98% concealed”. The normal sheeple never spot it. If cops do (and they usually do) it’s no biggie.
2) In an emergency we can pack sans permits in the states like AL where I am that allow permitless OC. (In some states such as GA and CT we have OC only with a carry permit that works for CC and OC, in which case we don’t get advantage #2. We still get #1 though.)
3) On a really hot no-jacket-possible day in AZ I often packed OC, no problem. Replica 1873-type single action (Ruger New Vaquero with massive modifications).
The problem with open carry is that open carry advocates make a practice of scaring the shit out of the general public. Sooner or later, the general public will have enough of it and ban the practice.
Not the ONLY problem.
Back before AZ had a CCW program ( I’m dating myself ), I carried open. That was the only option. And it was a PITA. Go into a store, a snowbird from Wisconsin would run to call the manager, who would sometimes freak out and make you leave and sometimes not. Go into a movie theater and soccer moms would grab their children and run for the exit, and soon the manager would come to throw you out. Walk down the street and a cop would soon be stopping you. ( Never went beyond running the weapon’s serial number, but still an inconvenience and waste of your time. )
Mall? Forget it. Don’t even bother.
In fact the only place I never had a problem was, oddly enough, the bank. No one ever batted an eye there.
that depends on your bearing and the way you’re dressed more than anything, i think.
i have a friend who has open carried for years in Delaware. he’s gotten hassled twice. he’s gotten a strange look just once. he OCs myriad pistols…revolvers, compact plastic fantastics, full size 1911s. he dresses very well – i don’t think he owns anything baggy, and he only ever wears polo shirts and either clean and fit jeans or khakis. he’s confident and never acts shady. he OCs in all parts of the state and in Pennsylvania and Virginia without issue, as well.
And how old is he?
Let the negotiation begin!
I live in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and OC is legal but a big no no, and can get you a big hassle from the PD and you not renewed for unsuitability. I am also permitted in neighboring Connecticut because I work down there, and they are OC/CC with a permit. The CT State PD went so far to issue a memo to all PD to stop harassing the OCs because it was legal, and charges of Disturbing the Peace and Disorderly Conduct wouldn’t fly.
I’ve OC’d a couple of times (prefer CC) and no one ran screaming from the restaurant, called in the SWAT team, or asked me to leave the establishment. In fact, most people I had encounters with pretty much ignored the fact that I was carrying in the open,
Sick tune. Also amuses me that it kicked up around the point that I reached the “I’M IN CHARGE!” bit, so it had that going for it.
Loving how the comic itself is going. One of the first I check each day (flip-flops btwn you first and Schlock, so I don’t think you’ll mind too much). Alex is definitely becoming one of my favorite characters.
As a long time CHL guy and daily carry person, my worry about open carry in TX is that it will lead to a new law that will make it more common for places to put up legal “no gun” signs that are enforceable on both open and CHL. Currently 30.06 signs which prohibit CHL carry are as rare as hen’s teeth. I’d hate to see that change.
…he’s handling this better than i expected. still annoyed she didn’t say something initially, though. communication: it works.
I don’t know, I think her actions at Goffey on their first meeting with Zera and Zulu said way more than she ever could have explained up front – he watched, heard Zulu’s brief explanation, and chose to jump in anyway. For him to assume that a night with him changed all of that instantly would be stupid.
call me paranoid, then. any time i’ve brought another into my life, they get the full drill of what’s going on, whether they’d previously seen me making out with someone or not.
I think it has been well established that he didn’t watch particularly closely. Also, for somebody as narrowly-experienced as Mick seems to be, it’s probably easier for his mind to grasp friends-who-greet-by-making-out than polyamory. Particularly true since Zulu was fine with it, which Mick’s vanilla mind would interpret to mean there isn’t a physical or romantic relationship there. In other words, I don’t think he “chose to jump in anyway” or “assume[d] that a night with him changed all of that”; both of those imply an understanding that he didn’t (and, with his lack of experience, couldn’t) have.
Fashion tip: always make sure your holster matches your handbag.
Greetings from Alabama, where open carry is, and always has been, legal. The idea behind open carry is that open carry personifies the right to bear arms (2nd Amendment). Any kind of carry that requires a permission slip is a privilege, not a right. Privileges can be legislated away, rights can’t. I open carry almost everywhere and have had only one negative incident (misguided Wal Mart manager). Most folks either don’t notice or are aware that the BGs are more likely to conceal.
Not to niggle too hard, but if you think you have any rights at all under your definition, you are living in a dream world.
I think that’s kind of the point.
> Any kind of carry that requires a permission slip is a privilege, not a right. Privileges can be legislated away, rights can’t.
No, I think not.
The Bill of Rights of the U.S. Constitution, the Constitution of the Great State of Alabama, and the Supreme Courts of both the United States and of the State of Alabama state that I, and every other citizen, have those rights. Note that those entities do not grant the rights, but they do protect them. If I, and other citizens lose those rights, it is because we did not care enough to defend them.
Then you will die with your rights intact, but you’ll still be dead.
Ask the survivors of Katrina about how much the government cared about their rights.
Rights are a human construction. They can be ripped away from you at any time.
Yep.
Similarly, academics will tell you that one of the tenets of capitalism is the existence of the private ownership of property. We don’t have that, either. And if you think we do, try not paying the property taxes on land you “own”. See how long it is until you are “evicted”. The state owns all the land, it just happens to offer really generous rental terms on some of it.
I’m one of your northern neighbors here in Oklahoma. We’re getting close to having had legal OC for a year. I think I’ve seen one or two people actually carrying openly since then, which is about as often as I ever saw it before it was legal. I’m a little shocked that Texas has not yet legalized it, as OK/TX legislation tends to ‘me too’ in both directions.
Excuse me, Sir. I couldn’t help noticing that you’re carrying a rifle …
… and it’s POINTING AT YOUR FOOT!
Also, that strap wrapped around the stock can’t help with aiming.
Wait, isn’t that up to Zera?
In theory, but maybe Alex doesn’t want Mick doing Zera. Maybe Zulu doesn’t want Mick doing Zera, and maybe Alex knows Mick isn’t Zera’s type. Just because it’s poly, doesn’t mean there aren’t issues.
Ultimately, sure, but asking Alex if he “gets to” implies that she’s some sort of gatekeeper. When having intro-level conversations, I suspect “no” may translate to “no, you do not automatically get to sleep with her just because I do” and not “no, you never ever are allowed because I am the dictatrix of her love life”. She might be sparing Zera the enthusiastic puppy experience of Mick running up to her and being all “Heyyyy Miss Thing” that she’d get if Alex just said, “well, ask her!”
…not that I’ve had the experience of new-to-poly dudes annoying the shit out of my girlfriends with inappropriate presumption in the past or anything.
also, i’m guessing (we shall see) that zera probably doesn’t care too much about Mick. She’s married, I can see his noob-ness grating on her nerves..
Answer: it all depends on the conglomerate dynamics of the persons involved.
My girlfriend actively tries to get me in bed with other women (I’m kindof an introvert), with some success from time to time. Her fiance has a steady secondary, with whom I have had sex once. The way it works with us is that your partner has veto power over prospective dates … and that power has been exercised. Said fiance was interested in this tiny little trainwreck, and we both (girlfriend and I) told him we’d prefer if he didn’t, due to the huge metaphorical “junior drama llama” sign everyone else detected floating over her head.
Seems pretty normal for a poly relationship. I wonder if Blondie’ll ever get to meet Zulu’s ‘Other Significant Other’, since it as nothing to do with him. Or if he even has one…
Texas NEEDS open carry. Dammit, Texas is internationally associated with cowboy, and cowboys are associated with openly wearing a revolver on your hip. We Texans have a reputation to maintain, and we need open carry to maintain it!
I did remark during my CHL renewal class that I wish I could carry openly in one of those flapped 1911 holsters you find at reenactment stores. The teacher in the class then theorized that with one of those holsters, because the flap conceals the gun, it might count as concealed carry actually. I wish to get advanced clarification before I do this, because being corrected by the police sucks.
I’m not sure what’s more difficult. Meeting/impressing parents/family, or the other members of a poly relationship?
For some reason, I think the latter.
it can be a bit of both. my GF’s parents don’t talk, and my best friend/occasional lover’s mother freaked out – mainly cause she was afraid the friendship would suffer. my parents are taking it hard, but accepting somewhat.
as for the GF’s husband, he’s getting better and better. it just took him a long time to adjust. before the GF and I met she was only having open relationships – mainly because the amount of guys in this town are dogs and just instantly though “hey, i can use her then hook up with her best mate!!! she won’t mind!!”
I’m kind of surprised I haven’t seen My Boyfriend’s Girlfriend (Isn’t Me) here yet… (Must Be Tuesday doesn’t seem to have any official video of it.)
I’m actually interested to see where this all goes — I have a number if poly friends in Austin, and it took me a while to wrap my head around the whole concept. My problem was trying to think of love as a zero-sum game… it was a bit of a revelation to realise that it isn’t.
Other definitions of note:
Pansexual: is into cookware.
Bipolar: swings both ways north of the Arctic circle.
Autofelatio: hooked up a vibrator to a car seat.
Poly: likes whites only (“wants a cracker”).
Sadism: only has sex while depressed.
Foot fetish: will settle for eight or nine inches though.
GIMP: Gnu Image Management Program – http://www.gimp.org
Switch: likes to play with electricity.
Bisexual: only has sex with hookers, like Omar.
The big thing about open carry is that it protects you from prosecution if your concealed weapon is accidentally revealed. There’s a youtube vid of a cop flipping out on a dude because dude’s holster was partly revealed. stuff like that happens, even if you just print. So open carry gives you some protection. And it should be your choice. I prefer not to. Thought about it thought. I have and awesome S&W 686 and a sweet leather holster for it. retention of course.
Oklahoma native here, and stretch has it exactly correct.
we were told that blood was going to run in the streets when open carry finally came on line, and oddly enough…it hasn’t.
i think i’ve seen maybe three true OCs in my daily travels around the metro OKC area, and i’m not totally sure those guys weren’t LEOs of some sort. what i have seen, tho, is more large-frame handguns in IWB hosters and fewer jackets on hot days.
