As I get older, the more open people are about sex. This is a cool thing.
In other news, this is a thing that’s becoming more popular, apparently. I’m not a big fan of full auto – in real life applications, it isn’t really something you need often. I’ve fired a few full auto rifles and subs, and yeah, it’s fun at the range – but your accuracy turns to shit instantly. Full auto, I am told, is mostly used to keep the enemy’s head down in a firefight, and I guess I can see that working – but wouldn’t it be better to pop the rifle into 3-round-burst, and when their head comes up, you take it off?
Anyhoo.

More open about sex? Hmmn, must be a youngin’. Had you lived thru the (especially early) 70’s, you’d have known what openness about sex was like. Everything we’ve got nowadays, minus the politically-correct-behavior-demanded-of-males, and you didn’t have to worry about dying from a one night stand.

Just because she likes older, bearded men doesn’t mean she has “Daddy” fantasies. I once knew a petite, lithe little thing that made a living as a Dom. Many of her clientele where hefty older men. It’s not as uncommon as you would think.
I’ve known big strong alpha fellows as like surrendering all the pressure that comes from being big strong alpha fellows. It can be a real kick for them to let someone else take charge. And some folks like to switch roles – Top, then bottom.
There have been days I wish I was wired that way… But I’m not. Not even Switch. *shrug* Guess I’ll have to live with the kinks I *do* have. :p
I never got to fire full auto while I was in, but my Dad was taught to use 3 round bursts. Partly for accuracy, and partly to keep from melting the barrel.
Conserves ammo, too. When all the ammo you’re going to have is what you’ve packed in, that matters. Especially when resupply is days and days away.
Oh, and I really like the way that girl shoots – Leans in, no hesitation, keeps the muzzle down, seems to really have a love affair with the rifle. 🙂

Well, if you’ve got three round burst capability, you’ve got full auto, too. And it’s better to have a setting and not use it than not have it and need it.
Though, I’m with you. Full auto is fun, but less useful than Hollywood makes it out to be.
Quite a number of selective-fire firearms have burst but not full-auto. For example, my understanding (somebody here with military experience would have to confirm this) is that M16s and M4s have either full-auto or burst, but no variant has both.
There are four basic fire control groups for the AR15 platform:
2-position safe/semi
3-position safe/semi/full
3-position safe/semi/burst
4-position safe/semi/burst/full
There are also some weird sub-variants, but they’re not factory options.
That being said, the design of the burst FCG is a gigantic kluge that makes the trigger pull horrible and unpredictable. Also, given the design, it’s not really a 3-round burst: It’s a 1-3 round burst.
The way the 3-position M16 burst FCG works is thus: There’s a cam wheel (two sets of three notches) on the right side of the hammer, and the disconnector has a second hook to engage the cam wheel. The wheel rotates one notch every time the rifle fires/cycles; when it gets to the deep notch, the primary hook on the disconnector grabs the trigger, thus stopping the “burst.”
That all being said, I think “That Guy” was really referring to the BATFE’s position that burst = FA.
I fired full auto with the M16 and, of course, fired the M60 and the Ma Deuce. If you’ve got a massed attack, full auto can be useful as you are sure to hit something, even if only accidentally. I got yelled at because I found that I could fire single rounds with the M60 and be reasonably accurate. And the Ma Deuce has such a slow rate of fire that it makes the world’s best sniper rifle (when you can’t get a real sniper rifle). Gunny Hathcock used one to great effect in Vietnam.
If you haven’t guessed it, I am of the “aimed, accurate fire” school of thought. Still think the M1 Garand was the finest military rifle I ever put my hands on.
I’ve fired a Ma Deuce that was de-mil’d to semi-auto only. HELLS of fun at 300 yards, weird firing stance be damned.
Watching the Gunners Mates let fly at “killer tomatos” (red inflatable target buoys), you get a sense of what can be achieved. Two- and three-round bursts from a M-2, from a rolling platform… One shot low, one dead-on, one long. More fun watching them play with the 20mm, though… A good gunner could blip off single shots, dead-on, on the roll.
Only rarely could I get a crack at the heavies… Mostly had to ‘make do’ with my M-14. 😉 Never served on a ship as had a Bushmaster. Would’ve LOVED to had a crack at one of those…
The M60 has a very basic open bolt design; As such, the trigger is basically just a glorified bolt stop. Firing lots of single shots tends to accelerate wear; once it wears down enough you’ll get a runaway, which basically makes the gun combat ineffective.

Even if it has few practical applications, there is still no reason for the government to prohibit it outright (as they have effectively done).
Still, machineguns really have two main uses: suppressive fire, and rapidly engaging targets that are relatively close.
Ask yourself this: If a burglar broke into your home, would you rather have a Glock 17 or an MP5SD?
HSR47, that is an incredibly easy question. I want an MP5SD if I could have one over a G17. At home defense ranges, full-auto + 9mm + long gun (2 handed hold) + not being a retard and not magdumping? You get what is essentially a pistol carbine that can deliver a lot faster than any handgun, and it is STILL incredibly easy to control. I haven’t gotten the chance to try an MP5 – a real one – yet, I truly wish I did, but from logical conclusions, I think I would love having one of these next to my nightstand.
My rule of thumb is if it isn’t belt fed, it doesn’t need to be full auto. I’ll make an exception for sub guns in some situations (say, you find a room that you want to clear has a lot more residents than expected), but that’s about it.

There is one other use for full-auto, and was part of the selection process for early Stoner/Armalite designs: The ability to storm a room and make a ten-foot section of wall uninhabitable. Basically storm trooper sweep-N-pray tactics.
Full auto, my platoon used it too suppress enemies in unknown locations so one of our teams could action on the objective from a better angle thus allowing proper ID of the target and removal of the threat. That or we used it to cut them in half if we got bored in a firefight.
