Internets to the rescue
One thing that the internet has led people to do is research new purchases online. This can be good – it can also be bad. Asking most gun forums what your first handgun should be will, usually, result in the following responses:
1. Don’t get a handgun, get a rifle and learn to shoot first.
2. GLOCKS GLOCKS GLOCKS
3. STFU NUB FAGOTS DICKS KILL YORSELF BUTTHURT U MAD LOL
4. 1911 1911 1911
5. Try various firearms and see what fits you, before you buy.
Although I agree with the first and fifth responses to varying degrees, I’ve known more than a couple people who took the advice of the Glock/1911 crowds and made that their first purchase. And some of them were happy with that purchase, so again, YMMV.
Well, at least she isn’t going the hipster route and avoiding the stuff she’s heard of. Is that a thing with guns? I honestly don’t know enough gun owners to say.
i’ve never encountered that, outside of the historic arms collectors. they like the weird ones. not that i blame them, mind.
Well, that’s different. Historic arms are already something there’s a limited supply of, and the weird stuff tends to be rarer and cooler. Also, historic arms collectors probably aren’t looking for real utility. I’m talking about people who buy, say, fixed-gear bikes and then actually ride them despite the fact that they’re not “mainstream” because they’re terrible.
If you live in a reasonably flat area and know more or less what gear ratio you mostly use then having a single gear can be easier to maintain and less cumbersome. I do prefer single gear to fixie through, I do like to coast a bit when I get lazy/have to slow down for traffic. That’s when I’m not being fat and leaving my unfixed bike to sit in a corner gathering dust…
I get that you dislike people making dumb choices out of a pathological need to be different, but sometimes people make choices you disagree with for a good reason. And I hope you don’t see people doing/using A B or C and just assume their choice was contrary or whimsical; that kind of negative view of the world can be quite self defeating.
My first was a 45 ACP (Hi Point). A cheap piece of plastic, yes, but the thing is a cannon, and with all of that weight it is a pleasure to shoot.
Ah yes…the non-mainstream handgun discussion. Like Bersa vs Colt or Hi Point vs Luger or S&W vs Jericho
What? No love for the Warsaw Pact surplus? 😉 The only pistols I’ve got are both Czech, a CZ-52 and CZ-82, that both fit my hands very well, compared to the blockiness of the Taurus PT-92 that I used on loan while in the Texas State Guard. The only real downside to those commie guns is the lack of selection in ammo, either cheap surplus FMJ or expensive US-made SD loads (if you can find it at all).
I’m a commie gun freak. Got two Mosins and a Chinese SKS in this house, as part of our collection. Fully intend to grab a Nagant revolver sometime next year.
Preach it, Brother! Rifles, I’ve only got two SKSs and an M48 YugoMauser. Handguns, most of my Tub o Happiness is commie iron. Makarovs, Tokarev, CZ 52 and 82, PA63, P64, P83…
Couldnt agree more, got a 91/30 (MN) and a cz 82, and i think they are the ultimate for the badass gun/price ratio, seeing as you can grab a mosin for $120 or cheaper in most places and a 82 for $220. Not bad prices for a sticky-bolted warhammer and a damn good 9.
