Ice Storm 5
Dec20
Yeah, welcome to winter in Dallas. Ice storm for three days, springtime temps the next day.
I love living here, I really do. I grew up in SoCal. I like living somewhere that has weather, rather than climate. At least Texas weather is exciting.
Was in Dallas last week. Weather was…variable.
Hotel room number was serendipitous: 1911. Which is what I carry. 🙂
I was raised (and live again) in southwest Iowa, then moved to the Ft. Hood area when my wife was posted there, then to the San Diego area when she got out of the Army.
I loved Texas because it had seasons similar to what I was accustomed. San Diego got boring…sunny and warm every day may be the ideal for some, but I need to see variable weather.
I consider it to be good weather if I don’t have clean it up with a shovel.
This.
I consider it to be good weather if I have to clean it up with a shovel.
That.
Shovel weather: snow, freezing rain, sleet, hail, hurricanes, tornadoes, avalanches, mud slides, forest and prairie fires, volcanoes, meteor impacts, and sharknadoes.
You forgot “Shitstorms.”
Control of sharknados and shitstorms would be a great subject for a webcast comparison of AR vs. AK vs. Mosin.
Meanwhile there’s some guy in Amarillo walking around in 37F slush thinking “hmm…shorts weather.”
My dad used to work for a tool manufacturer located in my hometown. At one point there was some reason (I have no idea what the specifics were) to bring in some engineers from Alaska. They apparently showed up in 34 degree weather in shorts and tshirts and were complaining about how warm it was.
The only reason Amarillo exists is that’s where the horses died.
Weather’s just crazy all over. Past week here in Ny we’ve gotten 6-8 inches of snow, temps in the mid teens to the mid 30’s. Today is supposed to be 40 or so, then Monday they’re talking about 60… I’m not complaining though, rain washes the road salt away and on Monday that means I can take the Harley out lol
In my chunk of NY it was apparently 63 today. Not that it freakin’ mattered since it was shitty out all day long and continues to rain into the night. We’re under a flood watch. *gazes longingly at snow shoes*
Current temp in SamBerdino: 48° — high today of 64°
[that’s San Bernardino, California (or Berdoo)for those who’ve never lived in the area]
Corpus Christi temp @ 7AM: 70° — high today around 86°
Foat Wuth area @ 7AM: 61° — high today around 66°
Driving north today, better bring a jacket, doncha think?
Fist day of winter. Standing around on the farm, on the bay… Where the wind blows wet and cold.
In shirtsleeves.
This is WTF weather.
First *full* day of winter. Nearly 70 degrees (f). A week ago it was in the high teens with snow accumulating.
Go home, Winter; you’re drunk.
It was 82 in Phoenix on Tuesday. Today not supposed to get above 60. Stupid cold. Stupid rain.
If I was independently wealthy I’d just live in the southern hemisphere from November to May.
As I was a-walkin’ out the front door of my main data center (48th & Baseline) last night, water pouring from the sky, the security guard gasped: “IT’S RAINING!”
…this must be that Observe and Report thing I’ve heard so much about.
My girlfriend is a pure Scottsdale girl. When it rains I have to drive her to work… She has never bought a set of wiper blades for her car…
Meh. Whingy. Get some real weather, then we’ll talk.
They don’t call this the Pacific NorthWET for nothin’.
Years ago I met a guy who’d just moved here (Vancouver, WA, called Vantucky for a reason) from TN. He was running us down because what we get here isn’t “rain”- where he comes from it RAINS, b’dammit, and you know it.
Two weeks later, he wanted to know when it was going to stop raining. This was early February. We assured him there was only another four months or so of unpredictable drizzle before he could make plans for outdoor activity.
A week later, he’d packed up and gone back to where it RAINS.
+1.
Along about November you begin to forget when it hasn’t been raining.
I understand you aren’t considered a local out there until your gill slits grow in (My brother insists he’ll have his any week now).
Can we borrow some of that rain for San Antonio? I wanna wash my car in my own driveway already without getting fined…
Hah. Texas “weather”. That’s not weather; it’s a hiccup in your golf schedule.
Move to where there’s REAL weather. So far over the past six months we’ve had temperatures ranging anywhere from 105 to -17. Those are real temps, not wind chills or “real feel” equivalents. We’re supposed to get nine inches of snow in a day or two.
The best part about Texas weather is watching all the other people freak the fuck out.
Storm rolls in. Native and Long-term migrant Texan workers just go about business. People not used to “Texas Weather” start worrying about tornados and shit. Raining so hard outside at noon that it might as well be midnight and we’ll pause occasionally to admire the thunder rolling through. Storm sirens start going off and we’re pondering loading up in someone’s car to go Storm Chasing. Or we’re outside with video cameras trying to track the path of the funnel that’s about to demolish who knows how much shit.
Yeah…. we’re crazy. And it’s mostly the damn weather’s fault. :p
I had to explain to my girlfriend why people go chasing those storms in Texas. It’s not for scientific research like Twister made it out to be. Nope, we were just crazy.
Any excuse for a party…
Meh. I grew up in Northern Ohio and currently live in Indianapolis. If’n you don’t like the current weather, wait an hour or two. It’ll change. We once went through an entire year’s weather in 3 days.
If you want to live somewhere with “weather”, how about New England? VT, NH, and ME are even gun-friendly. ME and NH are shall-issue for CC, and VT has had Constitutional Carry (no licenses required or even issued) since forever.
Applies to northern New England more than southern. I grew up along the Connecticut shoreline, and when VT/NH/ME were getting SNOW, and MA and northern CT were getting snow, we got drizzle. My mother, from upstate New York, calls them “wimpters”.
Unfortunately, the gun-friendly part also applies more to northern New England, although Connecticut isn’t terrible (and nowhere near as bad as you’d expect it to be).
Not a chance, it’s full of Yankees.
It’s OK, we accept transplants. That you moved north is a sign that you’re worth salvaging.
Bring mint Juleps, and you’re golden.
I’m used to most Texas weather, but the dust storms in the panhandle were a new one for me. As was the blood rain (ok, it wasn’t really blood, nor was Slayer involved, but it was messed up).
Well, judging from your description, we’ve been borrowing some of your TX winter weather this year.
:/
Goddammit I thought that was Magic Eye thing. Ow.
If you’ve not been to Texas, you might think this comic is exaggerating a bit.
It’s not. Not even a little bit.
I heard the stories, I didn’t listen. Then I visited Texas, without heavy jackets. The first day it was sunny and warm. I was wearing shorts and it was pretty hot. The second day the ENTIRE GODDAMN AREA was covered with snow and ice, temps in the 20s, and the poor Texans had no fucking clue how to deal with that or drive in it. The roads were a giant game of bumper cars. DOT guy on TV was proudly showing off their new ice scraper truck and saying they were good to go; as a northerner I’m wondering where are the other 29 ice scraper trucks they’re going to need to even make a dent.
So I finished my job and got the fuck out of there, which was only possible because they’d brought in some sort of farm tractors to scrape the ice off the airport.
This comic tells it like it is. Exactly like it is.
That said- crazy weather, and the people were a bit crazy, but they’re all REALLY nice and extremely polite, very sociable. I’d go back if I get another project out there again. I’d bring EVERY type of clothing though 🙂
Hey Grant. and everyone else on here. I’m trying to start up my own webcomic, but i need help with the HTML because i want to add things to the side of my page, if anyone here knows how to do that, and is willing to help me, please reply to me!
ON a not more related to FTF, the Ice storm short was really funny, and my gods so true about Texas weather!
Best way would be to learn some basic html. Try codecademy: http://www.codecademy.com/tracks/web
Also check out http://www.w3schools.com/ – some good guidance on basic HTML 5 and CSS. Definitely did not use them during this semester of web development, nope. *cough*
