Loudanum Dropz 1
Here’s the weird thing: I didn’t do any research on this one, I just thought to myself, while drinking beer in the shower one fine early afternoon, “Hey, know what the world needs? A Dubstep Steampunk band. They could call it Dubsteam music, and combine the two to make something glorious.”
Now, I like dubstep, to a degree – like most genres, 90% of it sucks, but there are a few gems. I also enjoy Steampunk. To my knowledge, nobody had combined the two yet.
Silly me. Turns out that a band I’ve heard a few times, Celldweller, has already done a few Dubsteam tracks.
Seriously, check this out – this is what L.D. would sound like, in the comic. But more to come on that, hhehehe.
EDIT: Wow, so there are more Steampunks on here than I thought. Or people who like it.
With that in mind, any Dallas area steampunk types need to check out the upcoming Skybourne Carnival in September. Guests so far include Voltaire, Steam Powered Giraffe, Unwoman, The Nathaniel Johnstone Band, Vernian Process, and many, many, many more. Two day Steampunk music festival, being put together by the notorious Arron Von Blackwolf. We fully intend to be there.
If I start a dubsteam outfit, and name it “Loudnam Dropz” would I need to pay you some sort of royalty, or a merch exchange or what?
I’ll throw in a bunny gas mask if I make it happen…
As long as I get some kind of attribution in a small way, fuck it. Knock yourself out.
what would it take for me to use the name “Loudnam Dropz”?
Make kickass music?
That looks nightmarish.
So, a friend of mine does a weekly internet radio show (it just finished as I write this).
You’ve given me my request for next week.
Holyshit. That was BRUTAL.
Love it!
That’s pretty much FUCKING BADASS right there.
1999?! How the figgety fuck have I missed this act for 14 goddamn years?
Holy good god damn! Where do you find this awesome stuff? And where can I get a direct feed into my veins!?
Far be it from me to question Celldweller, but what besides the video is actually steampunk about that track?
Given that steampunk is a constructed subculture and style there’s no specific music type that one could look back at and point to as ‘steampunk’.
Hard and heavy use of strings, much of the percussion is closer to the quasi-industrial clanking/ratcheting beats of Steampunk.
Loudanum Dropz??
Best of all possible names.
I blame the Wife. Asked her to come up with a “Dubsteam” or “Steamstep” band name, took her about 2 minutes. I threw one of my sock s at her for it.
I’m, sorry Jay but it’s now official: You married above your station. Props to Mel!
She had probably thought it up months prior, and was just biding patiently until you asked.
Wow very cool. I love some of Celldweller’s old stuff (not kept up to date unfortunately).
Switchback is an amazing song, always gets me super pumped!
Things will be interesting, in two and a half weeks. Pennsic has been shortened this year, so my decompression-back-to-the-World journey will be that weekend, instead of just Sunday. So, I’m stopping at a Pagan church camp for a Dubstep festival. They probably won’t let me fire the mortar at that, though.
I’m not sure what regular steampunk music would sound like. Probably just victorian era classical music with some bizarre distortions and crazy pipe organs.
I’d point at Unwoman, mid-career Abney Park, or the relatively new Nathaniel Johnstone Band, if people want a baseline on what “regular” Steampunk sounds like.
I tend to recommend having a listen to the Clockwork Cabaret podcast, although I’m not sure if they can properly be called regular. (They do put on a good podcast, though.)
Victorian Gothic, basically.

Oh
My
God
They did NOT just bugger up that awesome video, did they? Okay, admittedly I like both the vid and the music dubbed over it…but the original has EMOTION; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H1mX8ptsmBM

Sadly, Dr. Steel retired long ago.
I always felt Doc Steel was the closest thing to Steampunk Hip Hop I’ve ever heard. Also, after all the brouhaha and his self-aggrandizing plan to get such a rabid fanbase going, it’s funny that he only lasted a couple of years.
I think I’ll stick with Steam Powered Giraffe for all my Steam Punk music needs. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dDRHx4cPgbE
Oh. Oh. I’ve been following this comic since day one, but this is the first one to make me comment. I’ve been a fan of steampunk music (the usual suspects — Abney Park, The Men that will not be blamed for nothing….) for a while, but I had never really heard dubstep (and I’m still not sure what that is — any links for the confused?) and this is really neat. And interesting. Thanks for sharing.
Tomorrow’s update will have an excellent example of pure Dubstep in the daily news post. Also an Ab Park vid.
Ack! You lost me at dubstep…. couldn’t help but think of this:

Foamy!!!!!
Heh. The cognitive dissonance of Foamy saying that something is repetitive… blows the mind. I normally fucking hate that squirrel. Every episode is another rant about whatever peeve du jour the creator has, various insults and hyperbole sped up to sound funny. It’s actually kinda pathetic most times.
THAT SAID
I do agree with the heart of this rant. 95% of all dubstep is crap. Foamy’s bit here is spot on – a lot of dub is the exact same samples just rearranged with the same effects set to slightly different timefeels.
But the same can be said of many genres. Most pop rock is garbage. Most mainstream metal is trash. Most hip hop is awful. Most R&B sucks. Etc.
I look for the dubstep acts that DON’T suck. Skrillex has a couple good tracks, but a lot of his stuff is just annoying. A lot of DJs just remix any old song they can, and add wobble bass and a 2-step beat. Load of crap. (I especially loathed a recent Dubstep Sampler that had, no shit, a dubstep remix of “Yakity Yak” – a song that EVERYONE wanted to hear remixed into a dustep track. No wait – the opposite of that. NOBODY wanted to hear that.) What you want to try is Blackburner, Vex’d, Celldweller, and various other smaller unknowns you can find on youtube.
Like any other genre of music, you have to put in the effort to find shit that works. The only exception I can think of is delta blues, a genre that, to me, has very few misses.
This sounds a lot like KMFDM’s Hau Ruck album, with some Terrorfakt-like powernoise elements thrown in.
I dig it. I have a few ex girlfriends that look like Alex that I wouldn’t mind banging to that music… LOL
I’d be a bit more interested in said music video, if they had not ripped the video track from Lovett’s “eye of the storm’ without modification or even attribution. Not cool.
O.O SQUEEEEEEEEE! Love it!
Glad you like Steampunk, I also go by Sgt. Mustache, maybe we’ll see you at an event some time.
TTFN.
