Huh. Never in my life did I notice that .22 isn’t “ball” ammo officially. That said, I’m apparently not the only person to make this mistake – a quick Google search shows thousands of people using the term to describe Round Nose .22 LR.

But they’re specifically trying to outlaw my shotguns. Apparently they don’t like Russian semi-automatic shotguns that accept box magazines and/or drums.
Plus, I converted them to bullpup so they would be easier to move with in a close quarters environment. As a bonus, they look even scarier now! One of them is positively *EVIL* with its Muzzle Brake of Doom. I know it’s evil because it told me so. It whispers nasty things in the middle of the night. Usually it whispers about the 2nd Amendment, or squirrels. Sometimes it complains about not being fed enough souls. But usually it’s squirrels. You’d think a Russian shotgun would complain about wolves, or Cossaks, or something. But no. It’s squirrels. ;p

Does anyone seriously think any sort of ban is going to pass the House? Hell, it’ll be a job getting even the ones that really make sense passed, like universal background checks. Obstructionism is a way of life for the GOP these days, opposing even the things they agree with if Obama likes it too.

Sorry, but I think it makes perfect sense to deny guns to people whose criminal and/or mental health records make it clear they’re not to be trusted with a weapon.
So trying to stop illegal sales (which already occur because so many sales do not go through a background check) doesn’t make sense? Cracking down on straw purchases doesn’t make sense? Background checks at dealers have stopped a staggering number of sales to people not allowed to possess guns, why is that bad?
Can you tell me the number? Ballpark figure? And cite your source, please?

The number commonly cited is that 40% of sales do not go through a dealer and therefore no background check is done.
Here’s where I think you’re confused:
The NICS does not stop illegal sales. Ever. Illegal sales don’t have background checks. Those 700,000 denials “in the last ten years” were done in situations where the buyer was attempting to buy one legally, at a gun shop, above the board, and was denied for a technicality – they had a previous conviction on a crime that would have stopped them from buying a gun, they had warrants, etc.
Please read that again, because it bears repeating, and I don’t think enough people understand this.
The NICS absolutely does not have any impact on the illegal purchase or sale of firearms. Not now, not ever. All of my guns were purchased legally, but if I really wanted a gun that had ZERO paper trail to my name, I assure you I could buy one within a couple hours, just placing phone calls. If I had the cash, I could purchase full auto, short barreled shotguns, suppressed weapons, and many other completely illegal weapons. At no point would the shady individual selling me these illegal firearms ever hand me a Form 4473.
You say “a staggering number,” but I think less than 7% of background checks is hardly “staggering.” I honestly thought the number would be higher. Also, they don’t mention how many of those 700,000 were successfully appealed.
I’m sorry, but this is one of those cases where “common sense” does nothing. Your claim that the NICS stopped those people who shouldn’t have guns is a claim with no evidence to back it up. Trust me – if someone wants a gun, they will get a gun. The thing is, criminals (as a rule) don’t bother even going to the gun store in the first place. I do think the NICS is a waste of time and taxpayer money.

The reason they stopped supporting universal background checks is that the BATFE has been caught, repeatedly, going to gun stores and illegally copying 4473s. Can you say “Back door registration”, boys and girls? I knew you could.
So isn’t the solution to that to step up oversight on them? Maybe let them finally have a Director? Enforce the existing laws properly? That sort of thing? Sorry, but your answer isn’t an answer.

You’re not getting it. What does the NICS check accomplish, overall, if fewer than 7% of the applications are rejected, and firearms can be purchased easily without it? I’m not saying “laws are pointless,” I’m saying that there has to be a cost/benefit analysis here.
Your own argument actually favors making the checks universal. The very fact that they are stopping sales to people that should not be buying guns demonstrates their value. Would you prefer all those sales had been made?

1. No, not really. I don’t give two fucks about the NRA. Really. My opinions on firearms are based onmy own ideas, and not theirs. Bringing them up does not bolster your argument any more than telling me what Ben Stein thinks of gun control will help your side of the debate. It’s pretty much a non-sequiteur.
2. Argh. I want you to read this, over and over again, until comprehension occurs:

All that form does is deny people who are trying to buy one legally. You can be denied for owing child support. You can be denied for owing back taxes. You can be delayed by buying too many guns at the same time. You can be denied by being a convicted non-violent felon, and stupidly not knowing you can’t buy a gun at a gun store with that conviction. THIS is the kind of denial you’re crowing endlessly about.
You seem to think that in such a case, the denied criminal got denied, and then whoopsie, oh well, they just wandered off and accepted that they’re not allowed to have a firearm, gosh darn it.
Need I remind you that by definition, a criminal is someone who does things that are against the law?
Do you realize that one of the top things felons on parole get busted for is illegal firearms possession? As in they already have the gun, and didn’t buy it legally? This is not about a gun show loophole, or a private sale loophole. This is about people operating way outside of the law. How are you going to force THEM to use a form 4473? Make it illegal not to do so? Good luck on that, chief.
You know, I remember when California passed laws requiring licenses for Medical Marijuana Dispensaries. Now there’s no more illegal Marijuana sales in California! HOORAY!
In case the above is not clear enough for you: to answer your question directly, I’d rather we scrapped the NICS altogether. Yes, this means that over 700K people over the last decade or more would have been able to legally purchase a gun at a store, who were instead denied (and again, I challenge you to find data on how many of those denials were overturned on appeal). Yes, I would prefer all those sales had been made, because people who fill out 4473 forms aren’t the ones that I care about. The people buying guns at gun shows aren’t the ones that worry me. (Additionally, I have long believed that stripping someone of their constitutional rights because of a felony conviction is a bogus practice in the first place. This is only a tangentially related discussion.)
There are illegal sales of guns throughout the USA all the time. You stop them by busting the perp who’s selling them illegally – and these are not people who will be ruled by a piece of paper. The NICS soaks up tax money, and we get very, very little return for it. Much like mandatory drug testing for welfare recipients, this is a cost-benefit sinkhole that does NOT HELP.
Buy a double barreled shotgun, then go out back and fire of two blasts. This might work to scare them of. Might. Unless they see you and now know your weapon is empty, or if there is like 5 or more of them. Or are so pumped up on drugs they don´t have the common sense of a flea. Or…. Or…. Or…. I could keep going all day long with examples where DB shotgun just is not enough, or maybe is too much.
So many hype up the shotgun as the end all be all home defense. And it is a good pick, no doubt about that. But what if you are an old lady that can´t handle the recoil? Or maybe you are in a wheelchair? Missing an arm so reloading in a hurry is not an option? I could go on, but i think most here already know where i´m going.

Okay, not very knowledgeable about guns. Why is this stupid? I’ve heard about shotguns being a good home defense option. Is it because of the firing rounds in the air, going outside – something outside the shotgun idea itself?

Brian – first, thanks for admitting that you don’t know much about guns instead of pretending to be an expert like so many other people, including the vice president. It’s a refreshing breath if fresh air to hear someone ask a question instead of lecturing us about “high capacity clips”, “assault weapons”, and “high powered rounds,”
The answer to your question is threefold, and you corrected guessed one of the three:
1.) It is ridiculous to assume that you know the one size fits all solution for every home defense occasion. I would not recommend a shotgun I have any configuration to a 90 pound grandmother or a crippled person, for instance. His presumption this discussion displayed his ignorance.
2.) A double barrel shotgun is a specific more or less antique configuration of the shotgun platform. It holds two shots, is slow to reload and is generally used as a sporting gun so it is long and unweildy for home defense purposes. Its the last in the list of shotgun platform variations that most knowledgeable people would recommend with a straight face.
3.) The idea that you would fire a gun blindly in the dark hoping to scare someone off is not only dangerous, risky, and ill advised, it’s also illegal in most towns. I also hope that I don’t need to explain why firing off both shots in your gun when you need them to defend yourself is really stupid, even if you have more shells and can reload. Reloading takes ten seconds during which you’re defenseless.
The entire concept he describes is so gun-naive, I almost feel sorry for the schmuck.
Are shotguns a good home defense option? Yes. Are double-barreled shotguns good for home defense? Well, that depends, but it could be argued that they’re fine. But my home defense shotgun is a pump-action Mossberg, with 6 shots ready instead of 2, because reloading a coach gun with two barrels takes a lot longer.
Firing rounds in the air is just fucking stupid and dangerous. Those bullets are going to come down somewhere. Even buckshot can fall back down out of the sky and hurt or kill someone. If someone dangerous is on your property, going outside and confronting them by using a shotgun as a noisemaker is irresponsible and dumb as hell. I cannot stress that enough. It is dumb as hell. It’s the kind of shit people come up with when they know NOTHING about guns, and learned all of their home defense knowledge from movies or TV. Like Biden. Someone who would think “spray and pray” with a double-barreled shottie is a viable method of home defense.
The idea that an AR-15 is somehow harder to use for a woman is patent horseshit. An AR is lighter than a shotgun, easier to aim, easier to reload, and has only a fraction of the recoil of a shotgun. If shotguns were so much easier to use than the AR-15, then people would use SHOTGUNS for mass murder.

to further expound on why a double-barrel is probably not a good gun for home defense, and certainly would be low on the list of available shotgun platforms that I would recommend for home defense:
1.) Unless you saw them off (which can be illegal) they are typically really long (because their primary purpose is sporting_ and so are unweildy for home defense use.
2.) They only hold two shots and reload times are quite a bit longer than some other available platforms. My opinion is that the reload of a double barrel is much more difficult and slow than the reload of an AR-15.
3.) They are heavy – think about it: does a shotgun with two barrels weigh more or less than a shotgun with one barrel?
Finally, I want to emphasize that a shotgun CAN be a very good home defense implement. I use a 6 shot Remington 870 pump action in 12 gauge. That being said, you need to know what you’re doing with a shotgun to get the best use out of it. I posted a discussion of this a few days back on my blog if you want to link over, but the long and short of it is that 12 gauge loads available on the market will range from “you can shoot the bad guy from across the room and the shot won’t even penetrate his skin if he’s wearing a thick jacket” to “they hauled something that looked like a cross between poorly ground hamburger and a human corpse out of there, and had to take several trips to do it.”
That is one of the biggest risks in using a shotgun if you don’t know what you’re doing. If you assume that a shotgun is like a rifle and ammo is ammo, you will buy based on how cheap a box of ammo is and get something that is more like throwing a handful of rocks at a guy than shooting him. Remember, they use 12 gauge shotguns to kill moose, and also hunt for quail, so keep in mind that there is a much broader range of ammo choices out there than there are with rifles. With an AR platform (or any other rifle, for that matter), on the other hand, if you buy pretty much any available ammo for it, it will pretty much get the job done no matter what it is, because the difference in loads is pretty small.
