My parents immigrated to the U.S. from Germany and Switzerland after the Second World War. I was born in the U.S., raised in a bilingual household, and speak mostly-unaccented, Standard American English.
It’s amazing the ignorant shit people think it’s safe to say in front of me about “immigrants”.
pretty sure most of the time when people complain about immigrants they are talking about uneducated brown people. or at least it always is for me, never hear anything bad about white immigrants or educated brown people (Indian doctors etc)… thanks giving… now I want some mashed potatoes…nom nom nom
You’ve not talked to the “right” people. Level of education hasn’t been a factor to many of the immigrant-haters I’ve met, Indian doctors being a particularly good example.
If I’ve objected to immigrants it is specific individuals, and based on their actions, much the same way I object to specific Americans for specific reasons. I tend to keep my mouth shut about such things so that someone who is looking to take offense at someone doesn’t twist my words, ascribe tones and intent that is not there, and so on…
That’s who I hate. People who go out looking to be offended by someone so that their existence can mean something.
I enjoy pointing this out to them. My family is about half Irish-American and half Irish-still-in-Ireland; all four of my grandparents are/were immigrants. So when I hear some stupid shit like that, I get to say, “Like my family? We only got here within living memory…” and watch them squirm. No one expects the Irish inquisition! Occasionally they do realize that they’re being racist jerks as they watch themselves struggle to say “oh, no, not you, just those OTHER immigrants!” without reference to race. I hope it gives them food for reflection.
My great-great-grandfather jumped ship into the US during the Ellis Island era. Thus, I am the descendant of an illegal immigrant. That’s a fun one to throw at people too.
My grandma was an illegal immigrant for… gosh, 30 years or more? It wasn’t really considered all that big of a deal, since she was a nice middle-class white lady from Montreal and all, but seriously dude, my MomMom was an alien.
Strange, I tend to hear only about those who come here ILLEGALLY. And me being the son of an immigrant, who speaks Texan fluently, I can tell you that I have not heard many people opine that they dislike any immigrants. Of course my dad at one time had a guy in his office during an interview talk about, “Gotta keep them (n-word) out.” To which he smiled and turned the picture on his desk around of my step-mom. She was to me a wonderful black momma.
No, not an African American mother. African American Mother will talk to you about what you did wrong. Black Momma will knock the yellow offa yo ass.
The thing a lot of people in the US seem to miss is that only two things are possible: 1) you’re full-blooded Native American, or 2) you’re the descendant of immigrants. Every generation has its immigrants that they hate, it just changes over time as to who is immigrating and being hated. Latinos, Eastern Europeans, Chinese, Irish, Germans, probably even English, they’ve each had their chance to be hated by the immigrants who came before them; hated even as they’re doing the jobs that the people already here didn’t want to do. (The obvious exception being the Africans who didn’t have any choice in doing the jobs that the people already here didn’t want to do. Rather than being hated, they were dehumanized and enslaved, which is clearly not a preferable alternative.)
Basically, a lot of people are ignorant assholes. The best any of us can do is to try not to be ignorant assholes ourselves.
(The immigrant populations I mentioned are the ones that my hazy memory of American history tells me were particularly large and derided groups at some time. Obviously there are a LOT of countries not included above, but don’t worry; somebody here hated those immigrants too.)
Nah. “Native Americans”—aren’t. Their ancestors just immigrated here longer ago than everyone else’s. We’re ALL immigrants.

If it was anyone other than Tom, I’d say chain yanking. But given that we’ve already established Tom as a rampant homophobe and general asshat, xenophobia and ethnocentrism wouldn’t really come as much of a surprise.
Also, I’ve found that when someone feels they have to say “I’m not a neo-nazi or nothin’,” it’s because they’re trying to convince everyone (including themselves) of something that isn’t true.
I think it has been established already that Tom’s horizons aren’t all that wide.

I often complain about illegal immigrants. I know too many people who jumped through all the hoops to be here legitimately and are contributors to society to not make that very important distinction.

So, after a run of comics that were explicit about the need for clear communication, Tom is suddenly bad for pointing out (in a rough way) that cross-cultural relationships can be fraught with misunderstanding?
Cross-cultural and inter-racial relationships take a HUGE amount of work and communication. And you’ll still have problems on conflicting expectations.
But yeah, the Toms of the world or ebil homophobe wacists. Beat that straw-man. Beat him hard.
On a side note, I love that Omar seems to be an apostate who has the star and crescent tattooed on his ass.
This could also explain the tattoo (Crescent and Star being a big part of the Turkish Flag). If the parents leaving was vitriolic that could mean “Turkey can kiss my Ass!”

My family got here right before the War Between the Stattes, but cheap labor is actually good for all those people in the country who buy things. So I figure that when it comes to immigrants, as they aren’t able to go on the dole, and they aren’t felons or Enemies of the State, then let them all in!
There are two things motivating people to come here illegally: the dole being open to illegals, and the absurdly long, complicated, obstructed, tortuous, and difficult immigration process. Only millionaires are able to become naturalized citizens in under three years. I’d get rid of the dole for everyone, including myself. That’d get rid of anyone who’s only here to leech.
Either support the country you live in or live in the country you support. There’s nothing wrong with maintaining ties to your family origins it helps ground us. However don’t try to establish a “colony” for the homeland here, without a fair deal of assimilation the whole melting pot thing doesn’t work.
Even with what Tom said, he still strikes me as the type who’d have his share of Asian hookers in the past. Vietnamese if he’d actually been in ‘Nam, Thai if he hadn’t.

Fun story from the guy I know: He’s in his 20’s and looks exactly his age. He lived for some time in Vietnam and when he returned to USA he chatted with some woman and mentioned he’s been to Vietnam. She said: ”Thank you for your service” Small wonder three time as many people as went to Vietnam claim to be Vietnam veterans.

I’m sure Tom is ignorant enough to negatively experience culture clashes all the time, and in that context I can see where he’s coming from. I for one avoid other cultures, including plenty of other white folk, because I have a hard enough time just relating to people who are on the same page as me.

Who said Turks aren’t white? They’re as white as any other Mediterranean people. In terms of pure skin color, most Turks are paler than southern Italians.
