Speaking of, last night, we received our shipment.
Their inventory waxes and wanes pretty much daily, but RockAmmo.com has a wide variety of calibers, at near-pre-Obamascare II prices. With the exception of .22 LR, because apparently that shit is worth more than gold right now, wtf. The catch at RockAmmo is they ship bulk – I think the smallest order I’ve seen on any of their ammo is 200 rounds. If you’re looking for ammo, as Mel and I were, they deliver, and at a decent price.

Even the NRA is trying to debunk the whole “DHS is buying up all the ammo” canard at this point.
I just wish that I could figure out why the DHS keeps detaining me whenever I fly into the US…I must look suspiciously normal and harmless.
It is way too early to be reading this. I read “I know for a fact that the DHS just put in an order for 75 ok bullets.” That statement makes it sound like they are buying as much as me in the past few months, but must be Tula or something…

As I often warn people who are just getting into shooting, you might first consider the alternative of getting addicted to heroin. It’s cheaper.
That said, if you’re just buying a gun for defense, you can get a decent firearm for less than $400, if you shop around. And you CAN still find single boxes of ammo out there – you just have to search like crazy.
I’ve lived in places where heroin addiction was not only cheaper, but also more socially acceptable.
So have I. Like, every city I’ve ever lived in.
Well if you CHOOSE to shoot up heroin you are a victim with a disease. if you CHOOSE to exercise your constitutional rights without hurting anyone (including yourself) then you are a dangerous, reactionary, lunatic who is all that is wrong with society.
This is why I only inject heroin into other, unsuspecting people. Worst of both worlds.

I believe I’ll be in it for defense to begin with. The internet tells me that .38 specials are low maintenance and reliable. (wonders if gun shops offer men like that.)
I was surprised by my last visit to our local sports store, they had more ammo available than the last time I went in (tho that’s not saying much). They had .38 for pistols and lots of .30-06, as well as plenty of the oddball hunting calibers, anything with Magnum or Mauser in the name, and a full selection of 12ga. It’s still a ways to go before we get to pre-panic levels, tho.
I have yet to see any shortage of shotgun ammo. Or, for that matter, experience it – I usually buy my 12 ga bulk. And yes, I’ve seen a few boxes hither and thither – my local Academy Sports keeps getting .357 Mag Sellier & Bellot FMJ, $19 a box. I usually buy two boxes if they have it.
Bah. http://www.rockammo.com/ apparently has absolutely nothing in stock… blew most of my target ammo at Front Sight last month… :-/

Check the site throughout the day. Seriously, it updates a LOT, and that’s how we ended up scoring some 9mm.
$499 for a 1000-rd case of S&B 9mm may be half what some places are getting, but it’s still one and a half times higher than the actual pre-panic price of $200. 9mm has, more recently, shot up like .223 did late last year, so I’m sure it just hasn’t stabilized yet, but I can’t reconcile paying more than, say $250, for that.
It’s not Walmart prices, but $24 a box is still less than what my shooting range charges. YMMV. Frankly, I’m just happy that we finally HAVE some ammo again, and can go shooting. 9mm is dry as a bone here in Dallas.

Here in this house I’ve had a pet black widow, which when it got too big was finally donated to the local University’s entemolgy dept.,
also as of today we count no less than five paper-wasp nests in the back yard, all of whom are now our friends.
I think I’ve seen a few centipedes in the garden dirt..must catch one to send you.
They’re just tiny brown ones though.
All that notwithstanding, don’t get me in the same room with a “vinegaroon” sun-spider (Miniature, SoCal version of Iraqi camel spider)
The “sunspider” (Solifugid) of SoCal IS NOT the “mini version.” They are the exact same species as what’s in Iraq, and they get to the same size. The difference is that the big ones in Cali tend to stay away from civilization. They also are NOT deadly to humans, and are NOT trying to chase you when they run. I like them, disgusting beasts that they are.

I literally awoke beating myself repeatedly on the forehead. That’s a pretty weird experience, I tell you.
As I regained full consciousness, I first searched the covers, then leaned over the edge of my bed. I expected to see a normal spider of some sort, and as usual, my mind pictured a black widow.
But no.
There on the floor, apparently having fallen off of my face, was the solpugidifaegafoo..thing. It was slowly curling up in its death throes.
The episode did not endear them to me.

Of course I knew already that their venom isn’t deadly to humans.
